Testimonials

"I had suffered from frequent bad headaches and migraines for as long as I can remember. The migraines were getting progressively worse and lasting for up to 3 days. I'd heard that some migraines could be triggered by certain foods and I was interested to see if I could reduce the migraines either in frequency or severity by modifying my diet. Helen assessed my diet and came up with a plan that if I followed, would hopefully lead to some improvement. It wasn't easy for Helen to come up with a healthy balanced diet for me as I am also a strict vegetarian, so have already excluded many foodstuffs from my diet. I am also a scientist and was more than a little sceptical about achieving any positive results. I was very keen to at least try this approach though, rather than rely solely on potent drugs from my GP, working on the theory that prevention is better than cure! Within a short period of time I noticed significant improvements and was able to re-introduce some of the foods originally excluded (a lot of them my favourites!). I am now at the point that I rarely get headaches although still get an occasional migraine which I can usually attribute to eating a combination of too many of the trigger foods identified by Helen. I'm really pleased with the success Helen has helped me to achieve and I can highly recommend her as a nutritional therapist."

"Meeting Helen changed my eating habits which has helped with my blood sugar levels and hormone fluctuations. The report and consultantion Helen conducted was very thorough and informative, this provided me with good eating habits and advice on the good foods to eat. I completely believe that we can all eat and drink better which will provide us with long term effects which could lead to longevity."

"Meeting Helen has been a life changing experience for the better. I had a lot of unexplained symptoms and nutritional therapy has been my salvation. I have discovered that I am gluten intolerant and with Helen's help adapting to a gluten free diet has been easy. I feel that nutritional therapy has put me in control of my life for the first time in years and would strongly recommend it to anybody who feels that they have unexplained dietary problems. "

Nutritional Therapy

Helen Buchan - Nutritional Therapist
'I find that many people are unsure as to what Nutritional Therapy actually is and are perhaps a little apprehensive of it. I hope that the information provided here will leave you with a clearer picture as to what Nutritional Therapy is what can be achieved by it and what to expect at a consultation.'

What exactly is Nutritional Therapy?

Many people think that Nutritional Therapy is all to do with weight loss and indeed this is not an insignificant part of it, but the power of Nutritional Therapy does not stop there. In a nut shell, Nutritional Therapy is designed to help you change your diet and lifestyle to maximise your health, alleviating and preventing many of the common symptoms of ill health.

The Nutritional Therapy approach is a holistic one which assesses your genetic strengths and weaknesses, environmental exposure, past and present dietary and health history. This makes it possible to build a highly individual profile, from which it is possible to design a diet to match your unique dietary and nutritional requirements.

Most people would benefit from Nutitional Therapy to a greater or lesser degree. Minor things like not being able to sleep, skin problems or migraine can seriously affect the quality of day to day life and yet may be corrected through simple dietary change. The symptoms of much more serious conditions such as MS, Ulcerated colitis and many Autoimmune Diseases respond well to the Nutritional Therapy approach. Nutritional support can be a very powerful tool in combating the withdrawal symptoms relating to giving up smoking, alcohol, caffeine or even sugar.

Nutritional Therapy may also be used in relation to specific health goals such as weight loss and maintenance, rejuvenation and the prevention of heart disease, cancer and alzheimer's.

Please do not hesitate to contact Helen to arrange an informal chat to establish how Nutritional Therapy may be of benefit to you.

What to expect from a Consultation?

  1. It all starts with a brief telephone or email enquiry. This should establish quickly if and how I may be able to help you achieve your health goals.
  2. You will then have to complete a questionnaire, which you can pick up from Jesmond Beauty Clinic. This is an important part of the process, as developing a picture of your diet and health history will provide the basis for any dietary recommendations. Ideally, in order to process the information fully, it would be great to get the completed questionnaire back at least a week before your initial consultation. This information will also provide an indication of how many consultations you may need to reach your health goals.
  3. The initial consultation will be spent looking at the results of your questionnaire more closely. We will also discuss your health history and any current health concerns and identify areas where nutritional intervention could have a positive effect. Diagnostic testing may be recommended if appropriate.
Wherever possible any recommendations for dietary and lifestyle change will respect your food preferences and aspects of your current lifestyle. We will often provide information sheets, recipes, helpful websites, and further reading recommendations to aid your progress. All dietary, lifestyle and supplementary recommendations will be founded on evidence based scientific research.
  4. You will be advised to make at least one return consultation, approximately four weeks after your initial visit. This should provide enough time to put any recommended changes in place. If a return consultation is purely to monitor progress then half an hour should be sufficient. If tests have been carried out, it may take time to explain results and make further nutritional recommendations based on the results.
  5. Feel amazing!

Our relationship does not exist purely when our consultations start and finish.
If you have something nutritional on your mind, and you know it will only take a few minutes to resolve, we will be only too happy to help. Of course, if your query is of a lengthy nature a paid consultation may be necessary to deal with the issue fully.

Cancellations

It would be great if you could provide 24-hours notice in these cases. If this is not possible for whatever reason, then please still call to let me know you are unable to come.
